Pregnant woman in Belgium died of corona for the second time

The pregnant woman – her name or age has not been released – was admitted to the intensive care unit because her condition was deteriorating rapidly. How long she was pregnant is not disclosed for privacy reasons. Not even in which hospital she died.

Her death has since been confirmed by the Brussels health inspection, Nieuwsblad reports.

Virologist Steven Van Gucht of Sciensano says it is the second pregnant woman in Belgium to die of Covid-19. “The first case was a relatively older woman over 45 years old who was pregnant and became infected.”

“Several dozen young people have already died from the virus. But most of the time there were underlying conditions, ”says Van Gucht.

Vaccination

It has been known for some time that there is an increased risk due to Covid-19 during pregnancy. “Pregnancy increases the risk of a more serious clinical picture in the mother and premature birth in the baby,” says Van Gucht. However, the risk of hospitalization and death is still much lower than in older people or people with underlying conditions.

It is not known how many pregnant women in our country have already become infected with Covid-19. The Brussels health inspection does say that two weeks ago ten pregnant women with Covid-19 were in the intensive care of various Brussels hospitals. There are no figures for Flemish hospitals. UZ Brussel says they have already admitted pregnant women who were infected. But they cannot give more details.

Underlying conditions that can occur during pregnancy are hypertension or gestational diabetes, gynecologists say.

Previously, the various health ministers at the southern neighbors decided that pregnant women should be added to the group of people who can first receive a vaccine against the corona virus. From 4 May, their GP can have them added to the priority list. Van Gucht: “Until recently, a vaccine was not recommended as standard for pregnant women, but ideas about this have recently changed. Pregnancy is now seen as a complicating factor. Compared to their non-pregnant peers, these women are at an increased risk of hospitalization, admission to intensive care, artificial respiration and also death. The vaccine also poses no risk if you are planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. “

The virologist also suspects that the woman who has now died had not yet been vaccinated. “I would be surprised unless she was a health worker,” he said.

Baby saved

A pregnant woman also died earlier this month in Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg). She was 35 years old and from Brazil. The expectant mother became infected with the corona virus and died in her sleep.

Exactly a year ago, British nurse Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong (28) died. She worked in a London hospital where she herself was admitted with severe corona symptoms. In the end she died. Her baby could be saved and was named after the mother.
