Police threaten to strike during match Feyenoord – Ajax

The police unions have proposed to their supporters to temporarily stop work on Sunday during the football match between Feyenoord and Ajax. They have asked their supporters about this. Whether the work stoppage will actually take place will be decided on Sunday morning.

The unions ACP, ANPV and NPB have suggested that their members stop working from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The classic in De Kuip starts at 2.30 p.m. The question is whether it can continue without a police presence. “That is up to the municipality,” says ACP chairman Gerrit van de Kamp. A spokeswoman for the municipality of Rotterdam did not want to discuss the possible consequences of a work stoppage on Saturday evening.

Many police officers “are fed up”, Van de Kamp summarizes the mood among the profession. He refers to the violence against police officers in Barneveld and Rotterdam on Saturday. In Barneveld, a demonstration against the government’s corona policy turned into violence. Officers were pelted with stones, among other things. The same happened earlier in the day at the training complex of Feyenoord, where a group of supporters turned against the police. Officers and rioters were attacked with fireworks, among other things. Six riot police had to go to hospital because they were bothered by the fireworks.

Police officers experience a lot of dissatisfaction because they are “on the front line” and feel insufficiently valued. The police unions are in conflict with the government about a new collective labor agreement for the police. The fact that most police officers have not yet been vaccinated against the corona virus also adds to the frustration.

“We cannot get there anymore with words”, says Van de Kamp. His ACP and the other unions feel that their “hard and important work is undervalued and their loyalty is more than abused when it suits the administrators and government”.

Explosions cafes

It is unclear what the consequences will be if the police actually go on strike. Last week it was very restless in Rotterdam prior to the Classic. A number of Feyenoord cafés was the target of explosions. Strangers threw in the night from Thursday to Friday an explosive through the letterbox of Cafe The Hide Away in Rotterdam-IJsselmond.

Last night it was a hit in the capital. At Ajaxcafé Vak West on the Balboastraat in Amsterdam-West exploded heavy fireworks. The police are now investigating five explosions in Rotterdam and one in Amsterdam. Friday was for some explosions in Rotterdam a 21-year-old Amsterdam suspect arrested.
