National coach Louis van Gaal: ‘Jasper Cillessen is above Joël Drommel in the hierarchy’

“The fact that Joël has become ill is fantastic for Jasper,” said Van Gaal at the press conference. “He was also the first to arrive this morning. There is constant consultation with our goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek in particular and I have not heard a word of discord.”

The national coach explains the goalkeeper issue. „Cillessen is above Drommel, but Jasper was injured and coming back. I attribute many qualities to Jasper, Drommel is for the future. And I am not only national coach for the present, but also for the future. Cillessen can play a role at the World Cup.”

He is clear: “Cillessen is currently our third keeper in the selection.” Tim Krul himself called the national coach and indicated that he is currently choosing his ailing club Norwich City. “He is having a hard time at his club, which is not performing well. He wants to concentrate completely on his club

He continues: “Otherwise he would have simply been selected. If we go to the World Cup, I will of course bring a penalty specialist with me. I think you agree with me.”

And: “I just applaud such an attitude, I respect that.”

Preferred players aside

Ajax player Steven Berghuis is injured and not one. Van Gaal previously indicated that he is the only option for the position of right winger. “The preference of the players is now sidelined. On the left I have more options than on the right. Donyell Malen and Steven Bergwijn are now options. It will be a choice between these two. I can’t fit a new system in three days.”

Injury Danjuma

According to Van Gaal, Arnaut Danjuma, who did not make it to the end at Villarreal last weekend due to an injury, cannot participate in the evening training anyway. “But I don’t expect any further problems.”

Selecting Rensch does not fit into Van Gaal’s old philosophy

Van Gaal understands that many people were surprised when he brought Devyne Rensch to the Dutch national team on Monday as a replacement for the injured Jurriën Timber. “But Van Gaal’s philosophy no longer fits in this time,” said the national coach of Orange. “Today there is a lot of rotation at clubs with large selections.”

Rensch will get little playing time at Ajax this season. Last week he even got cramps in the away game against Heracles. “He did play in Young Ajax and Jong Oranje,” said Van Gaal. “I think he’s a great talent.”

Joël Veltman and Rick Karsdorp did get a lot of playing time at Brighton & Hove Albion and AS Roma in recent weeks. “But they weren’t options for me at the moment,” said Van Gaal. “I didn’t want to be the odd one out either. I wanted to do it with the guys from the last international matches. But when Joël Drommel became ill, I had to bring in Jasper Cillessen.”

In the past, Van Gaal only selected players who often play for their club. For that reason, Donny van de Beek is now not part of the Orange squad. The national coach says he has fewer alternatives for the position at the back right. “It is not surprising that I now look at the coaching profession differently,” he said. “I am also evolving. You also get a different philosophy. As a coach I have the DNA of Ajax. I always assumed my own strength and never looked at the opponent. Abroad, I quickly realized that this did not always work.”

Van Gaal expects the Orange to qualify for the World Cup

National coach Louis van Gaal has every confidence in a good outcome of the last two group matches of the Dutch national team in the World Cup qualifiers with Montenegro and Norway. “I assume that we will qualify,” he referred to the global final round at the end of next year in Qatar.

The Orange squad defends a 2-point lead over Norway in the last two games. Turkey follows on 4 points. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup, the number 2 will compete with 11 other teams in the play-offs next March for only three tickets. In the event of a tie in the group, the goal difference is decisive. In goal difference, the Netherlands can only be found in theory by the Norwegians or Turks.

Van Gaal is wary of Montenegro, Saturday’s opponent in Podgorica. “We were pretty outplayed by them in the first 20 minutes of our home game,” he said. „It was only when our wingers took a different position that things got better and we won 4-0. It is not a team that just defends. But in the end they will play football around their own goal.”

Norway has to do it next Tuesday in the final group match without the injured star player Erling Haaland. The Norwegians will receive Latvia on Saturday. If that match is not won, the Orange can already qualify for the World Cup against Montenegro on Saturday.

Spanish and French arbitrator for Orange in World Cup qualification

Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande leads the away game of the Dutch national team against Montenegro in the World Cup qualifier on Saturday. The Spanish arbitrator has never whistled a duel for the Orange before.

In 2018, he was the fourth official at a match between the Orange and England in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. That was Ronald Koeman’s first international match as national coach. The Spaniard also led Ajax’s home game against Atalanta in the Champions League last year.

Clément Turpin leads the Netherlands next Tuesday in the last game in the World Cup qualifier against Norway. He whistled for the Orange squad in 2019 during the Nations League semi-final against England. He also led a duel between Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in Astana in 2015. Virgil van Dijk made his debut in Orange during that game.

Van Dijk suspended for the Orange for the next yellow card

Captain Virgil van Dijk, Davy Klaassen, Ryan Gravenberch, Donyell Malen and Steven Bergwijn can no longer afford a card in Saturday’s away game against Montenegro. In a next print, they miss the last game in the World Cup qualifier with Norway in De Kuip next Tuesday.

Norway has six players ‘on alert’. Orjan Nyland, Stefan Strandberg, Martin Ødegaard, Mohamed El Younoussi, Kristian Thorstvedt and Andreas Hanche-Olsen were suspended on Saturday with a yellow card against Latvia for the game with the Orange.

The Dutch national team defends the lead of group G in the last two qualifying matches. Norway follows on 2 points, Turkey has 4 points less. Only the group winner qualifies directly for the World Cup, the number 2 gets a second chance in the play-offs.

Orange trains light for an enthusiastic audience

Under loud cheers from hundreds of mostly youthful spectators, the Dutch national team has completed the first training session in the run-up to the last matches in the World Cup qualifiers with Montenegro and Norway.

National coach Louis van Gaal had an almost fit selection during a light practice session. Only Danjuma followed an individual program.

Due to corona rules, the internationals did not hand out signatures after the training.
