It doesn’t stop, more snow is on the way

After midnight there may be heavy gusts of wind on the coast and inland the weather institute expects winter rainfall. “If necessary, we can have all of the Netherlands sprinkled with a layer of salt within two hours,” says a spokesman for Rijkswaterstaat. “There could be clearings tonight, but on a wet road that can cause slippery conditions. Then we ensure that there is salt on the road for that. So there is a chance that we have to start spreading. ”

Code yellow applies from midnight to 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning. “There is a small chance that this code will turn orange, but there is a greater chance that the code will remain yellow,” said a KNMI spokesperson. Code yellow includes the warning that there is a local risk of slipperiness, with the advice to adjust driving behavior.

A lot of hail for a short time

“Just like Tuesday, you see that a lot of hail can fall in a short time and then you have a white road surface. Fifteen minutes later it may have melted again, but the moment it falls, it is slippery. Then you have to pay close attention, ”says Rijkswaterstaat.

With the exception of a few places, those showers are no reason for sprinkling on Tuesday. “That is not yet necessary, because the road surface temperature is high enough. Above zero it makes no sense to sprinkle salt. ” Tonight, the gritters come into action at the push of a button when there is a risk of ice and when the road surface is dry, but a snow shower is approaching.

The predictions are also no reason for the ANWB to alert road users. “We do recommend that people keep an eye on the weather before they hit the road,” says traffic jam reader Erwin de Hart. He also points out that the weather can change with those showers and that road users must be aware of this. “There is no code orange yet, but keep in mind that visibility can be poor and your journey will take longer.”

Pigtail winter

We owe this tail end of winter to air that comes directly from the North Pole. “So it is not surprising that the thermometer shows a particularly low value for this time of the year,” said weatherman Alfred Snoek of Weerplaza.

Also tonight some snow and hail showers are still active. Before midnight it freezes in Overijssel, Gelderland, Brabant and Limburg, among others. In the coastal areas it is slightly less cold, partly due to the increasing wind. In the Wadden area, rain or some wet snow will follow around midnight. The rest of the Netherlands soon also had to deal with rainfall. “Along the west coast mainly rain falls, inland the precipitation almost only falls as snow,” says Snoek.

The snowfall lasts a few hours and is sometimes quite intensive, so that the snow eventually remains. “There is a good chance that during the night in the east, southeast and partly in the middle of the country a layer of snow of a few centimeters will form. Outliers of about five centimeters cannot be ruled out. The fallen snow did not melt immediately in the morning. Especially in the east and southeast, Wednesday can start with a snow cover of a few centimeters. In the middle of the country, most of the snow has already disappeared before sunrise. ”

After the next night the chance of snowfall seems to decrease. Snoek: “The temperatures go up just a little bit, enough to allow most of the precipitation to fall as rain or hail. Spring weather will take a while, because this weekend it also seems to be on the cold side with occasional rain. ”

A repeat of last year with weeks of sunshine and drought in the months of April and May seems very unlikely this spring. “The coming weeks are clearly a bit more changeable with certainly room for the sun, but also regularly some precipitation in the form of showers. Certainly not bad for nature! But whether the warm air (15 to 20 degrees and more) returns quickly remains to be seen … ”
