Christian Eriksen collapsed during the first European Championship match of group B between Denmark and Finland. The Danish ex-midfielder of Ajax had to be resuscitated on the field. It led to a lot of panic among his teammates, opponents and people in the stands.
UEFA has since confirmed that the midfielder’s situation is stable and that the game will resume at 8.30 pm. A photo from the AFP news agency showed that the midfielder is conscious. In the meantime, both teams and the arbitration have discussed a decision. Both teams have decided that the game can be resumed after it was announced that there is no longer any reason to panic. The Danish federation DFB has also confirmed that Eriksen is awake and that further investigations are being conducted.
Agent Martin Schoots also had a conversation with NPO Radio 1 know that Eriksen’s situation is stable. ,,I spoke to Christian’s father”, said Schoofs. “He’s breathing and he can talk. In all circumstances, that’s good news.”
Shortly before the halftime signal, Eriksen was played on the right side of the field. The midfielder went to the ground when he had to take the ball. The medical staff rushed to the Inter player with a stretcher, but quickly realized that CPR was required. His teammates reacted excited and gathered around Eriksen.
Also in the stands and with opponent Finland it was quickly realized that Eriksen’s situation is worrying. Danish supporters sit in the stands with tears. The game was immediately stopped, but it has now been decided that the game will resume at 8.30 PM. Eriksen’s wife was also removed from the stands soon after the incident to go to her husband. After fifteen minutes of CPR on the field, he was carried away behind cloths.
According to the Danish BT the midfielder was immediately transported to the hospital by ambulance. The ambulance left the stadium without flashing lights to Rigshospitalet’s emergency department. That hospital is opposite the stadium. The audience was asked if they could remain seated. ,,You must remain seated until we can tell you more”, said the stadium speaker.
The 29-year-old midfielder went through Ajax’s youth academy and broke through in 2010. In 2013, the right leg earned a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, where he enjoyed six glorious seasons. In 2019 he made the switch to Inter. In the Serie A, he was crowned champion last season.
