Five conclusions: Ajax’s birthday bombarded itself as the Europa League favorite
Exactly 121 years after the birth of Ajax the team from Amsterdam reached the quarter finals of the Europa League. These are the five conclusions, now that the second victory over BSC Young Boys is in the bag.
Successful birthday Ajax
Ajax blew out no fewer than 121 candles today, but still had enough breath left to definitively deal with Young Boys. Bayer Leverkusen’s executioner insisted a bit in the opening phase, but after David Neres’ opening goal, the Swiss resistance was broken and the adult Ajax again booked a simple victory in Europe.
Europa League favorite?
Beating Lille twice and beating BSC Young Boys twice: Ajax is still clear in the knock-out phase of the Europa League and has now become one of the big contenders for the overall victory. After 2017 and 2019, the Eredivisie back on a European dream flight.
Leading role for VAR
Ajax was not allowed to complain with arbitration in Bern. No penalty after hands from Edson Álvarez, but a penalty after unfortunate hands from Mohamed Camara and a very easily rejected Young Boys goal … Referee Bobby Madden and the video ref were favorable to Ajax. Let’s hope that not all VAR luck is gone at Ajax.
Tadic personification Ajax
Another assist, another goal: Dusan Tadic is the symbol of Ajax. The Serbian captain is the big man in 2021, a year that cannot fail for the Amsterdam club anyway. Sixteen of the eighteen matches were won, Ajax has eleven loss points less than PSV in the Eredivisie, Vitesse awaits in the final of the KNVB Cup and the Europa League quarter-final is now also a fact.
Almost simultaneously with Neres’ 0-1, Tottenham Hotspur went down dramatically against Dinamo Zagreb. Ajax cannot take revenge on Spurs in the quarterfinals, but with the Croats, the team from Amsterdam also has a bone to pick. Come on in, winking Croat Domagoj Vida. Other options in Friday’s draw (1pm): Arsenal, Granada, AS Roma, Manchester United, Slavia Prague and Villarreal.
