In itself, the draw was not too surprising given the recent performances of both teams. FC Twente has drawn seven times since the winter break and won only twice. And SC Heerenveen is certainly not in top form either. The Frisians won only three of the thirteen matches this calendar year.
FC Twente coach Ron Jans surprised in the Abe Lenstra Stadium with his starting line-up. Regular basic players Danilo and Godfried Roemeratoe had to start on the bench and the kick-off was Luka Ilic as striker and veteran Wout Brama, who had recovered from an injury.
Ajax-mercenary Danilo started the season great and was at the top of the top scorers classification for a long time. After thirteen duels he had already scored eleven goals, but only two more were added in the next fourteen.
Jans kept faith in Danilo for a long time, even when he was dry for no less than nine games in a row, but now thought it was time to take action. “After the winter break he is really struggling and sometimes someone needs something to get the most out of themselves. He is one of our best players, a great striker, but it is a bit stimulating ”, said Jans in front of the cameras of ESPN.
SC Heerenveen also did not have its top scorer. Henk Veerman, good for thirteen goals this season, was absent, because he has become the father of a second son, named Joe. The spearhead was sorely missed, because the Frisians occasionally showed nice football, but were almost harmless for the goal of FC Twente goalkeeper Joël Drommel.
FC Twente had the better of the game in the first half and were very close to the opening goal twice. First, Luciano Narsingh saw a bet taken off the goal line by Jan Paul van Hecke, who himself had been at the basis of the chance of losing the ball in the penalty area. And Jesse Bosch could almost cheer, but his bet hit the post.
Roemeratoe’s reserve turn was over before half time. Brama sustained an injury and was forced to be replaced just before the half-time signal, so that Roemeratoe was still in the team.
After the break, there was finally also a great opportunity for SC Heerenveen, but Siem de Jong hit the ball in a favorable position right on Drommel. The FC Twente goalkeeper, who is in the waiting room for the transfer he wanted to PSV, also had a quiet evening. After SC Heerenveen’s attacking activity, FC Twente got some good chances, but again Bosch and Ilic did not get the ball in. It was striking that Danilo stayed on the couch for a long time. Only fifteen minutes before the end he was allowed to try to break the ban for FC Twente, but the Brazilian never once came into a promising position and could no longer avert the bloodless 0-0. Queensy Menig miraculously hit the post in the 91st minute, but the ball didn’t go in there either: 0-0.
A result that is of little use to both teams and which can especially benefit the competition in the battle for the play-off spots.
