After a series of seven duels without a defeat (four victories and three draws), the former bottom of the league has come to one point from number sixteen Willem II. Not only the sixteenth place, which offers an escape option via play-offs at the end of the stage, but also the safe fifteenth place is again within reach. It currently contains VVV-Venlo, which has the same number of points as Willem II, but played one game less. The Limburgers, who have all lost the past nine matches, will receive number two PSV in-house on Sunday.
For months everything went wrong for FC Emmen, but now the Drenten also have luck on their side. During the visit to Sittard, referee Joey Kooy had a decisive role, who put the ball on the dot and sent Fortuna defender Roel Janssen away with red after holding Paul Gladon lightly. A severe punishment for a not very serious offense. Peruvian striker Sergio Pena seized the opportunity.
Fortuna, which has been safe for a while after the good series around the turn of the year, started the match well, but as the game progressed FC Emmen came into the game better. Trainer Dick Lukkien has found his permanent formation. A team that includes no fewer than five winter fortifications.
Patience paid off
Where at the bottom almost all other teams have changed trainer (only RKC Waalwijk kept the trainer on his post), FC Emmen has always kept faith in trainer Dick Lukkien. Even after the 1-0 defeat against RKC Waalwijk in round 22, Lukkien was allowed to continue by the club management and the patience paid off, because the Groninger got the team going.
What Lukkien can blame his team is that they did not definitively distance themselves from Fortuna’s ten after the 0-1 by pushing through for a second goal. It seemed to come quickly, but Paul Gladon’s goal was canceled due to Kerim Frey’s offside.
The ten of Fortuna became increasingly dangerous towards the end of the game and five minutes before the end, substitute Dimitrios Emmanoulidis scored the equalizer. The dismay was great at Emmen, which, however, immediately straightened its back. Two minutes later the ball was on the dot. Goal scorer Emmanoulidis walked Glenn Bijl on his heels and the right back used the second penalty for FC Emmen controlled. Deep in injury time it became 1-3 via Gladon after intervention of the VAR. In the next round at home against Heracles Almelo, FC Emmen will get the chance to get above the red line for the first time this season.
