Emmen also wins in Sittard and approaches losing Willem II to a point
FC Emmen has again booked a very important victory in the Eredivisie on Saturday. Coach Dick Lukkien’s team was too strong for Fortuna Sittard thanks to, among other things, two striking penalties with 1-3 and saw competitor Willem II lose 4-0 at Heracles Almelo a little earlier in the evening.
Emmen has already been seven league matches without a defeat (four wins, three draws) and is still seventeenth, but number sixteen has approached Willem II to one point. VVV-Venlo is fifteenth with just as many points as Willem II, but will be in action this weekend. The number seventeen and eighteen are relegated directly and the number sixteen plays play-offs.
On a visit to Fortuna, Emmen took the lead early in the second half by a penalty kick from Sergio Peña, which was awarded after a foul by Roel Janssen. Janssen got a red card for that offense – he held Paul Gladon; that seemed severely punished.
In the final minutes, the home team with ten men seemed to grab a point thanks to Dimitrios Emmanouilidis, but Emmen still won. Glenn Bijl was allowed to take a penalty and did not fail, after which Gladon was allowed to celebrate his third goal after two rejected goals.
There are still five rounds of play to go in the Eredivisie. In addition to Willem II and VVV-Venlo, Emmen also has RKC Waalwijk in its sights. Fortuna is virtually safe as number twelve in the competition.
Stand at the bottom of the Eredivisie
- 14. RKC Waalwijk 28-26 (27-43)
- 15. VVV-Venlo 28-22 (39-73)
- 16. Willem II 29-22 (31-61)
- 17. FC Emmen 29-21 (30-58)
- 18. ADO The Hague 29-16 (22-64)
Willem II does not enforce anything against Heracles
Willem II put down a good run last month under trainer Zeljko Petrovic, but lately it seems that things are getting worse. After last week’s 0-1 defeat against ten players from AZ (after an early red card for Teun Koopmeiners), the team was behind the times against Heracles throughout the game.
After six minutes, the home team took the lead when Sinan Bakis put his head against the ball after a corner by Rai Vloet. The Turkish striker also signed for the 2-0 at the end of the first half, after being served by Kasper Lunding.
Immediately after the break, Robin Pröpper put an end to the visitors’ last hope. The captain hit after being left completely free at a corner. Fifteen minutes before the end, club top scorer Vloet crowned an excellent performance with his fourteenth goal of the season.
Willem II must hope that VVV-Venlo, which also has 22 points, will not stunt PSV on Sunday. Heracles is eighth. That position would be just enough at the end of the regular season to compete in the play-offs, with a ticket to the second qualifying round of the Conference League at stake.
