Dramatic VVV runs against ten of Groningen against historic zeperd

VVV Venlo has done itself a particularly disservice on Saturday evening in the fight against relegation by losing 0-1 against Fc Groningen. The team of coach Jos Luhukay played seventy minutes in-house with one more man, but was hardly able to do anything from an offensive point of view. Azor Matusiwa was on the side of the visitors the unfortunate with two yellow cards in a short period of time. It meant the ninth consecutive defeat in the Eredivisie for VVV, the worst series ever at the highest level. Nothing changes in the position: VVV remains sixteenth, while Groningen has to settle for sixth place.

Traditionally, Groningen has a hard time in Venlo and was last able to win in 2010 when visiting VVV. This time the team started from Danny Buijs The game was strong and Mohamed El Hankouri created the first danger of the match, by hitting the top of the bar after three minutes of play. The visitors dominated the game in the initial phase, but had to continue with ten men halfway through the first half, after Matusiwa was sent off with two yellow cards. The midfielder went through twice on Vito van Crooij and was sent off the field by referee Bas Nijhuis.

Despite the surplus situation, VVV was unable to create significant opportunities. Groningen succeeded. Tomás Suslov sent Jörgen Strand Larsen into the depth, after which the striker found the side net after a good individual action with the right. In the second half, VVV did dominate based on possession, but hardly managed to achieve great opportunities. After an hour of play, a threatening play by Yahcuroo Roemer seemed to jeopardize the goal of Sergio Padt, but it was Ko Itakura who managed to avoid any danger with the utmost effort.

Across the street proved Christian Kum VVV a good service by defusing a dangerous cross by Alessio da Cruz before El Hankouri could become dangerous. While the game then seemed to be heading for a goalless draw, El Hankouri still gave Groningen the victory three minutes before the end. The attacker won the game against his direct opponent and took a nice shot from more than twenty meters with a line in the lower left corner: 0-1. In injury time, VVV still seemed to get a point out of the fire, when Roemer worked the ball past Padt, but it was Giorgos Giakoumakis who touched the ball just before in an offside position, so that Nijhuis rejected the goal.
