De Jonge keeps the option open for the cup final to be played with an audience

Corona minister Hugo de Jonge keeps the option open that there may be an audience at the final of the KNVB Cup tournament, although the current corona measures have been extended until April 20. Ajax and Vitesse will compete for the cup on Sunday, April 18 in De Kuip. “I don’t want to anticipate that, but it could be”, said De Jonge.

With the current package of measures, no spectators are allowed at sports matches. Moving the cup final to a date later in the year, so that fans may be allowed, is not an option for the KNVB.

The football association still has a glimmer of hope. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte also said at the press conference that the RIVM models about the course of the corona virus contain major uncertainties. “That means it can be disappointing, but also not so bad,” said Rutte. “If in a week it turns out that the figures are better than expected, then we can and will act quickly. We look very broadly at all sectors. ”

According to De Jonge, after the series of Fieldlab experiments in recent weeks, including at two football matches, events are being looked at where access tests are already more possible than now. “The experiments have been quite successful. A test consortium is currently setting up a hundred test lanes. From April, 100,000 tests can be done in it. We are now making a calendar of things that may be possible in April, drawing lessons from recent Fieldlabs. There will not be a dance festival every day, but we are trying to make a few smaller things possible by April. ”

Last year, the cup final between Feyenoord and FC Utrecht could not take place due to the corona crisis. The cup tournament ended without a winner.

De Jonge expects that next summer the public will be allowed to enter the Johan Cruijff ArenA during the four matches of the European Football Championship in Amsterdam. “I can’t say how many there could be exactly”, said De Jonge at the press conference. “The European Championship is only in June, that will take a while. It takes place at a time when the epidemiological situation is better than it is now. ”

The Dutch national team plays its three group matches at the European Championship in the ArenA. The Ajax stadium also houses one game from the eighth finals. “I hope that the games can be played with an audience. I even hope that as many people as possible can enter that stadium in Amsterdam. I don’t have too many problems with that for international football ”, Rotterdammer De Jonge said with a joke. “So fine, let’s try it. Colleague Tamara van Ark is in talks with the KNVB. I think that more is possible with access tests than without access tests. ”
