Criticized Velthuizen I should not have gone below the bar

Piet Velthuizen takes the blame for the commotion that arose after his debut for Fortuna Sittard. The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who was quickly injured, admits that he should not start last week, but does not care about the criticism.

Velthuizen had not played a game since 2017, but received a starting spot from trainer Sjors Ultee last Sunday in Fortuna’s away match against FC Groningen (1-0). The native Nijmegen did not appear fit, injured his hamstring and was replaced by Alexei Koselev after 23 minutes.

“I am old and wise enough and should have been smarter”, Velthuizen says a week later in conversation with Gelderland broadcaster. “But you want to put yourself back on the map after such a long time. You’re a footballer, you always want to play. That failed for now, I just shouldn’t have stood there.”

Velthuizen was ridiculed, but the single international of Orange is not very impressed by that. “In football you get the credits or the shit. People can laugh whatever they want and say: ‘That Piet is too fat.’ I really don’t care. ”

Goalkeeper coach has not advised me to play

Velthuizen’s performance not only led to criticism of the goalkeeper, but also caused great unrest internally. Goalkeeping coach Sieb Dijkstra previously advised not to get Velthuizen, but the Austrian Tobias Knoflach. He felt passed by Ultee and got into trouble with the head coach this week.

Fortuna eventually decided to remove Dijkstra from the technical staff and to return it to the youth academy. Velthuizen is aloof in the soap, but emphasizes that no one has said to him that he should not play.

“The goalkeeper coach did not advise me against it. It was my own decision to try it. Together we chose this. Ultee asked if he could take a position and I said yes. Then I can hide behind nothing”, said Velthuizen .

It is not known how long the former goalkeeper of Vitesse has been out of circulation. A boost for Ultee is the lightning-fast recovery of Yanick van Osch, who may already be fit enough to play in the home game against PSV on Sunday. That game starts at 2.30 p.m. and is led by referee Allard Lindhout.
